Frequently Asked Questions About
Neways Essential Oils

Who
Uses Essential Oils?
- Massage
therapists, reflexologists, accupressurists, nail salons, skin
specialists, homeopathic practitioners, hospitals in England and France.
The United States utilizes Essential Oils less than most other countries
for therapeutic assistance. They can be used by adults,
babies, children, seniors, and animals.

How
Do I Test Before Using?
- We
recommend testing essential oils by applying a small amount of
diluted
essential oil to a small skin area. If irritation or burning occurs,
dilute the area with Massage Oil and discontinue use.

What
is Aromatherapy?
- Aromatherapy
is the use of essential oils extracted from plants, herbs, barks, and
peels to promote health and well being and improve quality of life. The
body becomes more balanced through the use of essential oils.
Aromatherapy is a natural part of life, though you may not have attached
a name to the experience. Everyone has emotional and psychological
responses to scent.

What
are Essential Oils?;
-
Essential
oils are the life force of plants.
The “blood” of the plant. The liquid intelligence or the life
force of the plant.
-
Essential oils usually
secreted from special glands, ducts or cells of one or several parts of plants
and from the sag of certain trees. Found
in different parts of the plant such as roots, bark, stems, leaves, flowers,
seeds, fruits or resins. When you crush the petal of a rose or
tear the leaf from a peppermint plant, a liquid substance emerges. These
tiny drops of liquid are called essential oils. Citrus oils are pressed
from the peels or rinds of fruit.;
-
They are not greasy and
evaporate easily, leaving hardly a stain and do not leave behind any toxic
residue.
-
The quality and
quantity of each oil is unique, extracted through different methods, times of
day, from various plants and flowers grown in different countries and seasons
apart.
-
Balance internal
systems Processed in the body same as other nutrients Affects every cell in
the body within 20 minutes.
-
Can be applied in a
variety of ways:
Ancient
civilizations understood many of the aromatic and therapeutic uses of
oils and resins. The modern world is barely beginning to comprehend the
value of these hidden treasures

What does Therapeutic Mean?
The medical dictionary says: A Treatment, having a medicinal or healing
property; a healing agent.

What are Single Species Essential Oils?
The best way
to describe this is to give an example. Let's use Lavender, although the
process could apply to almost any oil.
We sell
only the pure highest quality "Single Species" French lavender; Lavendula vera,
(High Altitude Lavender) - with an excellent GLC reading.
Another company not wanting to pay the price
for such an oil (or wanting to make a larger profit when reselling) might do any
of the following:
-
Mix a low quality of any species of
lavender with linalool to smooth and sweeten the aroma. These types of
adulteration are common in France and many other countries. France sells many
times more lavender oil each year than it actually distills. True French
lavender is in very short supply, and is difficult and expensive to obtain.
However, this is the only type NEWAYS will distribute.
-
Mix the French lavender with Bulgarian
lavender, or a combination of hybrid lavenders such as Spike and Lavandin.
Hybrid lavenders have a high yield, but low quality therapeutic content - and
again, you no longer have a single species. Many companies commonly do this in
the distillation of Peppermint and other oils as well.
-
Sometimes a company will try to
grow their own plants, (to save money), on soil or in a climate that
does not truly support the best species. However - the best Lavender
grown in the US can't come close to the therapeutic value of the best
Lavender grown in France!
-
"Enhance" the scent. Some
companies will take add other mint oils to their peppermint oil to smooth
out the smell and make it smell like candy. This makes an inferior product
because it is no longer a "single species".
VERY IMPORTANT - The above types of
adulteration make it possible for the oil to be labeled "pure" and
"unadulterated"...and NOT BE THERAPEUTIC!
Essential Oils from "Single-Species" are
more therapeutically powerful than even the best "non-single-species"
Essential Oils. Non-single-species oils may have a very low, or NO
THERAPEUTIC VALUE WHATSOEVER.

What
is the History of Aromatherapy? -
Egypt
was the birth place of medicine, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals more than
six thousand years ago. The ancient Egyptians practiced the art of
massage and were famous for their skin care formulas and cosmetics.
Fragrances, herb oils, balsams, and resins were used in embalming
techniques and religious ceremonies.
The
use of aromatics spread from Egypt to Israel, Greece, Rome, and the
entire Mediterranean world. Every culture developed practices of
perfumery using oils, but with the Dark Ages, much of this knowledge was
lost. India is the only place in the world where this tradition was
never lost. Ayurvedic (life-knowledge) medicine is the oldest form of
medical practice using oils and has been in continuous use since the
inception thousands of years ago.
The
advent of modern science in the 17th and 18th
centuries marked the decline of most forms of herbal therapy. However,
in 1928, a French cosmetic chemist, Rene Maurice Gattefosse (Ga-fo-say)
made a remarkable discovery. While working in his laboratory, he
severely burned his arm and thrust it into the nearest vat of cold
liquid. The liquid happened to be lavender oil. Gattefosse was surprised
to find that his pain lessened and there was no redness, inflammation,
or blistering. It was he who coined the term "aromatherapy".
Others followed Gattefosse on the path of rediscovery with essential
oils.
In
1964, Dr. Jean Valent published The Art of Aromatherapy and the
movement in Europe had rebirth. Madame Marguerite Maury established the
first aromatherapy clinics in Paris, Great Britain, and Switzerland, and
studied the rejuvenating properties of essential oils. Her research was
published in English as The Secret of Life and Youth (1964).
Today, thousands practice aromatherapy in France, Russia, England, the
Ukraine, and many other countries.

WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF ESSENTIAL OILS?- Essential oils are highly
concentrated, volatile (evaporate quickly) plant extracts that contain
hundreds of organic constituents and other natural elements. Essential oils
carry the beneficial properties of the plants they were derived from and
provide a natural form of herbal energy. Most essential oils are lighter than
water and yet are not water soluble, and they are able to dissolve in body
fats. The beneficial therapeutic properties that SCIENCE HAS VERIFIED so far
include: Oxygenating, Immune-stimulating, Mineralizing, Tissue rejuvenating,
Organ rejuvenating, Cellular function rejuvenating, Anti-microbial,
Anti-viral, Antiseptic, Anti-infectious, Anti-tubercular, Anti-neuralgic,
Anti-rheumatic, Anti-tumoral, Anti-bacterial, Anti-fungal, Anti-cancer,
Anti-oxidant, Anti-toxic, Anti-venomous. There are more than 100 healing
properties in Essential oils.

WHAT
IS A "PURE" OIL? -
A
pure essential oil is one that does not contain added chemicals or
additives of any kind, including vegetable oils. A pure essential oil has
nothing added to it. However, a pure oil does not necessarily have a high
therapeutic value. In fact, the therapeutic benefits of a pure oil can be
very low. This can be somewhat astonishing when you first begin to
understand aromatherapy. What you are looking for is a pure essential oil
that has the highest therapeutic content. Only a GLC test and a proper
reading can determine the therapeutic quality of an essential
oil.
Our essential oils are pure
essential oils released during the first distillation. After distillation,
they are not chemically altered or changed by additives. Neways believes
products used on the body should be void of harmful chemicals. While many
companies sell perfumed oils, or even oils that are commercial grade, the
essential oils you receive from Neways will always be of the highest quality.
You cannot find essential oils of a higher therapeutic content. Only a handful of
companies in the world can make that claim.

What
are "Folded" Oils? - The
term folded refers to oils that have been redistilled several times to
remove constituents, with the aim of changing the scent of the oil for
use in the food and drug industry. However, therapeutic qualities are
important, and folded oils are unsuitable for use in aromatherapy.
We
do not distribute oils that have been folded. We guarantee that our
essential oils are single-specie, therapeutic-quality oils that have
been distilled at proper temperatures and are 100-percent
pure.

How
Do Essential Oils Work? - The
therapeutic potential of essential oils has yet to be fully understood.
Ongoing scientific research is needed. We do know that essential oils
can benefit systems of the body and affect each one differently.
Essential oils work on the emotional level, the energetic level, and the
physiological level. They are all interconnected. Essential oils affect
the mind, body, and spirit, and provide a holistic approach to
supporting the body.
Aromatherapy
is much more than merely a reaction to an aroma or scent. Essential oils
have three modes of action:
PSYCHOLOGICAL
- imagine that you have gone back in time to your early childhood home.
Close your eyes and picture walking through the door. Chances are, in
addition to familiar objects, certain smells will also spark your memory
-- your mother's perfume, the smell of baking cookies -- essential oils
have a remarkable ability to influence your psyche by evoking moods and
memories.
PHARMACOLOGICAL
-- Chemical changes take place as the body reacts to the application of
essential oils. European doctors who study phytotherapy (the study of
the whole plant) are trained to use herbs and essential oils internally
to supplement the body's health systems. Essential oils have a
remarkable ability to work in harmony with the body in maintaining
overall good health.
PHYSIOLOGICAL -- Essential oils applied externally take physiological
action. The action is more subtle than oral applications and less likely
to cause undesired effects. For example, Rosemary and Peppermint
stimulate, while Roman Chamomile and Lavender sedate. Rosemary is a hypertensor (supports energy boosting), while Geranium is a hypotensor
(assists in relaxation). This is one of the reasons essential oils
should not be used internally without qualified medical advice. For
people with abnormalities within their body systems, ingestion of an
essential oil that has a direct action on the affected system could
cause their conditions to worsen.

What
is Linalool? - Linalool
is found naturally in many oils. It is the substance that creates the
sweet smell. Some companies add natural or synthetic linalool to
low-quality oils to create a sweet smell. We never do this. We maintain
the integrity of the oils just as they are removed from the
still.

Are
Your Essential Oil Bottles UV Protected? - Yes.
Our bottles are soda/lime with quartz sand mixed in. This type of
bottle, no matter what the color, even if the bottle is clear, provides
excellent UV protection. Many people have been told that only
amber-colored bottles are UV protected, or that they offer the highest
level of UV protection. According to a major glass scientist, this
information is incorrect. Neways essential oil bottles provide UV
protection of 85 percent.

Will
Essential Oils Stain My Clothing? - No.
Vegetable oils and certain forms of carrier oils will stain
clothing.

Are
Essential Oils on the fringe of Complementary
Medicine? - Really the
opposite is true. Essential oils have been in existence since the very
first plant, tree, fruit, and shrub existed. This makes them the oldest
form of herbal therapy. Ancient cultures used these oils and resins in a
wide variety of ways. While essential oils are relatively new to
America, countries such as Russia, England, France, India, and the
Ukraine do not consider aromatherapy or the use of essential oils for
therapeutic purposes new, unusual, or fringe. They consider it
essential.

How
do I Know Where to Put the Oils and Which Carrier To
Use? - There
are no hard and fast rules of application, either with the amount of oil
or the areas of the body. Some people prefer to mix the oils with
Neways
Mixing Oil, while others choose
Tangible massage lotion.
If you want the oils to remain on the skin's surface longer, use the
mixing oil. If you want a more direct application that is absorbed into
the skin faster, then use Tangible massage lotion.
Click Here for the different types
of applications.

Can
Essential Oils be Taken Internally?
- We
do not give instructions for internal consumption of essential oils or
recommend that you use them internally.
In
some European countries, medical doctors are trained to work with
essential oils internally. The oils are obtained by prescription through
a local pharmacy. In the United States, some essential oils are on the
Food and Drug Administration GRAS list (generally recognized as safe to
use). However, we cannot make health claims about essential oils. The
exception to this rule is Tea Tree, which falls under a grandfather
clause in the United States.

Can
I Use Essential Oils Every Day? - Yes.
Many people cannot imagine a day going by without using essential oils
in one way or another.

Do
You Grow All of Your Own Crops? - -No,
and neither does anyone else. Our essential oils are grown all over the
world. There are numerous factors that go into developing an oil for
aromatherapy. The beginning is a healthy seed or plant in proper soil
with ideal growing conditions. After the plant is grown, then proper
cutting and distillation must take place. Ensuring all of these factors
are in place requires constant supervision from an
expert.

Are
All of Your Essential Oils Organic? - Some
are certified organic and some are not. There is no scientific evidence
that oils grown organically have a higher therapeutic value than those
that are not. Of course, when possible, we purchase organic essential
oils, but only if they are of the highest therapeutic profile. We
guarantee that the oils are totally free from pesticides and any form
of chemicals.
There
are companies that claim to grow their own organic crops. When closely
analyzed, the oils may not be certified organic, rarely are single
species, and do not compare to the therapeutic, raw, single-species oils
that we offers.
Other
companies have tested our essential oils. In every instance, they have
found these oils to be of unusually high quality. In a world filled with
marketing schemes, we are proud to offer essential oils that set the
standard for the industry.

How
Do I Use Essential Oils? - You
may want to begin by using the oils on the bottoms of your feet. Try 1-3
drops of an essential oil blended with 4-6 drops of Neways Mixing Oil or
Tangible massage lotion.
When
your body adjusts to this application, you may use the oils on specific
locations of the body. Essential oils should never be put near the eyes
or in the ear canal. Massage is a very effective way of using the oils,
combining their properties with the therapeutic power of touch. You may
blend 30-60 drops or more to an entire bottle of tangible massage
lotion.
Diffusing
the oils through a cool air system is the finest method for direct
inhalation. The pure oil remains with all of its properties intact and
escapes into the air where it may be of benefit after the diffusing is
complete.

How
Will I Respond to Essential Oils? - Only
your body knows how you will respond to essential oils. Some people are
sensitive. If you are a first-time user, have fair skin, or are using
the oils with babies and children, take precautions. Dilute the oils
using a carrier such as Mixing Oil or Tangible
Massage Lotion. Suggested reading "Simple
and Essential", by Cathy Gileadi".
In
random cases, essential oils applied directly to the skin may result in
a rash. Some people may seem to experience a detoxification or flu-like
symptoms when using the oils for the first time. Detoxification is the
releasing of stored toxins from the body. People who have experienced
difficulties using essential oils in the past may have been applying
oils that were adulterated by either synthetic or natural means. Pure,
raw, natural, highest quality essential oils rarely cause problems when used
correctly.

What
is a Carrier? - A
carrier is a substance that delivers or transports essential oils to
your body in a responsible manner. Our
Mixing
Oil and Tangible Massage Lotion are
ideal carriers. WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND USING A CARRIER.
Our
Mixing Oil is a combination of the
following oils:
-
Grape
Seed Oil (Vitis vinifera)
-
Apricot
Kernel Oil (Prunus armeniaca)
-
Safflower
Oil (Carthamus tinctorius)
-
Primrose
Oil (Oenothera biennis)
-
Tocopherol
(Natural vitamin
E)

What
is the History of Essential Oil Testing? - Essential
oils are tested using a method known as chromatography, the science of
separation. Mihail Semyonovich Tswett, a Russian botanist born in 1872,
is considered the father or chromatography. He coined the term in 1906
when he described his experiments using a chalk column to separate the
pigments in green leaves. "Chromatography" described the
colored zones that moved down the chalk column. It is believed that he
chose the name by combining the Greek words Kromatos, meaning color, and
graphs, meaning written. It is possible that he named the process after
himself since Tswett means color in Russian.
Prior
to the 1970s, few reliable chromatographic methods were commercially
available. Gradually, new techniques highly improved the separation,
purification, and quantification of chemical compounds. Computers
greatly improved the process and by the 1980s, chromatography was a
commonly used analytical tool in chemical laboratories working with
flavors and fragrances. Orange, tea tree, and eucalyptus were among the
first oils to be tested in the United States.
Modern
chromatography is generated by injecting a sample into a moving stream
(mobile phase) which passes over a non-moving bed of particles
(stationary phase). The stationary phase can be a solid or a
liquid-coated solid that is packed into a column. The liquid coatings
can be applied directly to a thin capillary column. Separation of the
analytes is achieved by the analytes adsorbing onto the stationary phase
by the mobile phase. the analytes that adsorb more strongly onto the
stationary phase take longer to elute off of the column. There are
several different types of chromatography.
In GLC, or gas liquid
chromatography, the mobile phase is a gas and the stationary phase is a
liquid. For essential oils, GLC is the most common type of
chromatography used. the resulting chromatogram is often referred to as
the essential oil's "molecular fingerprint".
Chromatograms
are of little or no use to anyone but a trained professional. This is
why is necessary to have trustworthy experts to perform the test. They
can bring attention to cases of adulteration with chemicals that would
not normally be present in an essential oil.
Essential
oils can also be adulterated with natural substances (i.e. lemon with
d-limonene, ylang/ylang with linalool, peppermint with menthol, etc.).
It takes an expert to interpret the GLC analysis and detect such
"natural" adulteration. To the novice, the GLC trace may
look acceptable because no synthetic adulterants are detected. Upon
expert analysis, however, it will be seen that the ratios of the
constituents are inconsistent and it will therefore be evident that the
oil has been altered. John Black, our quality
control expert for essential oils, has more than 20 years of experience
interpreting GLC analysis.

Does
Your Company Have Aromatherapists on Staff? -
We

essential oil line. In addition, several third-party experts assist us.

Why Our Essential Oils Are
Different
Neways Essential Oils are guaranteed
to be raw, genuine, unaltered, pristine, single species, and therapeutic.
One would consider these qualities to be more than adequate when
considering an essential oil purchase. And indeed, these are desirable and
amazing qualities. However, Neways Inc. offers two more guarantees that
are even more dynamic in nature. You will want to become properly
informed about them.
-
#1 Neways is able to
trace their essential oils from plant to bottle.
-
#2 Chemotyped oils are not
used as a marketing ploy for greater profits.
There are only a handful of
companies in the world that can trace their essential oils from plant to
bottle. This means knowing the location where the plant or seedling was
grown, when and how the plant material was harvested, and how the
distillation of plant material was performed. Most large companies, and
even some small ones, cannot trace the path their essential oils have
taken. This is because traders and brokers exchange essential oils a
number of times. They loose track of where the essential oils have been,
and under what conditions they have been stored.
This is not the case with our oils. We are able
to trace all of our essential oils from plant to bottle because of quality
control expert John Black. John is actively involved in growing and
distillation projects around the world. He can trace the essential
oils he sells to our Company literally from the time they were planted
until the essential oils enter our building to be bottled.
Mr. Black spends the
greater portion of each year supporting and working with the people who
supply our Company’s Essential Oils all over the world. His
twenty-five plus year reputation in the therapeutic essential oil industry
make him, the leader. John is respected in the essential oil industry not
only for his integrity, but also because he is well acquainted with the
standards and
concepts in both the flavor and fragrance sector and the increasingly
exclusive therapeutic oil industry. Mr. Black is a true expert and is
sought for his ability to analyze Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrum
test results.
John Black is able to detect and
identify ‘GC’ peaks on essential oil test results that other experts are
not able to recognize. John can detect fragrance and chemical adulteration
in essential oils, even the most clever adulterations. Our Company has
always felt extremely fortunate to work with John Black.
The Essential Oil
Industry
In most cases, money seems to be
a driving force in business. It is the same in the essential oil
industry. The flavor and fragrance industry, which consumes nearly 90% of
the world’s essential oil production, looks for essential oils that are of
no particular quality, inexpensive, and plentiful. That industry then
re-distills and blends these oils to suit the scent needs of other
industries, including food consumables, cosmetic, personal care, and
household. You can expect that both artificial and natural additives will
be injected into these essential oils to perfect a desired flavor and
smell that can be replicated.
The therapeutic essential oil
industry and the flavor and fragrance industry have struggled over 40
years to have separate identities. Yet, even the therapeutic essential
oil market struggles within itself to keep integrity.
Many companies involved in the
therapeutic market see no problem crossing over and purchasing essential
oils of no particular quality when necessary. Even when the more
pristine, exclusive essential oils rise in price and are difficult to
locate, our Company does not compromise. We are not interested in cheaper
quality oils simply to gain greater profit.
Some essential oil companies seek
selectivity by using acronyms such as AFNOR, which lead people to believe
these letters are some kind of magic guarantee for purity. In fact, this
is not the case. These marketing techniques only lead ‘curious’ people to
investigate further. If you would like more information specifically on
AFNOR, please request it from me.
The question always arises.
How can the average consumer know the quality of essential oils they are
buying? I’ve heard numerous people say, “You all say the same thing.
How can an ordinary person know who is telling the truth”? I believe
first and foremost, you must ask questions, and if you don’t get the
answers you want, or the answers that make sense, a red flag should go up.
You also need to understand a little about essential oils, and this
involves reading and learning. Essential oils may not be easy, but
they certainly are worth it.
What’s the Issue
With Chemotyped Essential Oils?
When an essential oil is tested
and found naturally to have one or more main ‘key constituents’ that are
higher, or lower than normal, it is identified as a chemotyped essential
oil. Aromatherapists and phyto-therapists refer to the properties found
in essential oils as constituents. Chemists speak of them as
‘chemicals’. Hence, the word developed by chemists, ‘chemotyped’.
Naturally grown chemotyped
essential oils are rare and in short supply. When true chemotypes are
available, they can command higher prices. In and of itself, there is
nothing wrong with a naturally occurring chemotyped essential oil, and
they can be therapeutic in nature. However, the real question is, are
chemotyped oil superior in any way? And here, lies the debate.
For the last 25 years, the dark
cloud that has loomed over the practice of aromatherapy is the lack of
reliable scientific evidence regarding the viability of plants and plant
essences to fight disease.
Since the advent of synthetic
medications, the emphasis of medical therapy has been on chemically active
medicinal ingredients that combat infectious disease. The central idea is
that every disease-causing organism has a chemical enemy, which will
destroy that disease. Chemists classify anti-microbial agents according to
their active ingredients. In other words, laboratory analysis seeks to
test medication for the one principle active ingredient or chemical.
Some scientists believe the same
has to be true for essential oils. The one active ‘chemical’ in an oil
makes it more beneficial. The scientists are entitled to their belief, but
I have yet to see any scientific data that a chemotyped oil has greater
efficacy than a whole, unaltered, genuine, therapeutic, single species
essential oil.
In fact, since 1972, a team of
French medical doctors has been working with whole, genuine essential
oils, the same type that our company uses, in both laboratory and clinical
studies. They have found that the complete composition of an essential oil
rather than one single constituent makes the oil effective. In fact,
their work overwhelming concludes that the chemotyped oils are not better
than a single species, whole, complete essential oil. If you would like
to learn more about this subject, read The ABC’s of Phyto-therapy.
Be Aware – There
Is More
There is a valid and very real
concern with promoting chemotyped essential oils. There is almost no way,
except with an expert like John Black, you can tell if the essential oil
is a true chemotyped oil or if it has been tampered with, even a little.
Essential oils can easily be created to appear as chemotyped. You can do
it naturally, or you can do it synthetically, but the point is, you can do
it. For example, you can add a geranial to a single specie rose geranium,
or thymol to thyme. I have been offered numerous varieties of chemotyped
tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils, usually out of Australia.
If an essential oil has an odd
profile, it can be labeled a chemotyped oil. People will try to sell it
as something unique, unusual, and more beneficial, ….. for more money. I
believe you can understand why a quality control expert is absolutely
necessary.
After having said all of this,
you may be surprised to learn that our company does insist on one
chemotyped essential oil in its line. Our Basil Linalool is grown
specifically to have a naturally occurring low menthyl charvicrol level.
This makes it not only prized oil, but also a very safe basil essential
oil to use. Safety is always first and foremost in our mind where we are
concerned, so we have always insisted on this oil.
We have not marketed our Basil
linalool as a chemotyped oil, nor have increased the price. We have
quietly offered this oil only to provide you the safest basil possible,
and we guarantee that this oil grew naturally and was not altered in any
way. John Black guarantees it as well.
I have always been opposed to
marketing chemotyped essential oils as superior, except when one is needed
for safety. I continue to support the law of all or nothing.
