Sweet Orange

(Citrus Sinensis)
An anti-depressant, antispasmodic, stomachic and is mildly sedative in its nature.

Oranges were introduced to the Mediterranean by the Arabs. also successfully grown in Florida, California, Israel, Brazil and South Africa.  Oranges were used during the plague to make pomanders to help protect against the disease.  The scent of Orange seems to carry some of the smell of summer and sunshine that were needed to ripen it.  Orange oil was not used medically until the seventeenth century, rather late in the history of aromatherapy.  Legend has it that oranges were probably the "golden apples" of mythological times. The sweet, warm fragrance of Orange oil is ideal for children and for adults who have forgotten their inner child and are too serious and tense.
Although not as antiseptic as lemon, orange essential oil still combats flu and colds.  A massage oil eases indigestion and overcomes a light case of insomnia or depression.  The scent of orange reduces anxiety and lightly lowers high blood pressure. Use Orange in a massage to relax and provide energy after a hard days work, or for a facial massage. Diffuse Orange to help ease symptoms of bronchitis, colds, chills, and the flu, and to soothe stress and depression.  During times of illness, diffuse orange in the house as an environmental disinfectant.  A clockwise abdominal massage of Orange may ease constipation and water retention, while a few drops added to a facial wash or shower gel encourages radiant, younger looking skin. Orange makes an excellent body moisturizer, and when added to the bath has a calming effect.  Orange has excellent de-greasing and cleaning properties.
