Canker sores have been around for a long time. It seems like everyone has had to deal with a them at one time or another. There's nothing worse than having a canker sore that rubs on your teeth. Ouch! Fortunately, there are many home remedies floating around out there, and some of them work!
Is there a difference between canker sores and cold sores?
First, let's cover what a canker sore is not. A cold sore is not the same as a canker sore. Although the two are used interchangeably, a cold sore differs in origination and location.
A cold sore is caused by the herpes
simplex virus. Don't panic! This type of virus (herpes simplex
virus type 1) generally only infects those body tissues that lie
"above the beltline" and it is Type 1 that causes cold sores in
the majority of cases.
Also, a cold sore is generally found near the edge of a person's
lip, or on the surface of the skin near a person's mouth. In
other words, they are most often visible to others.
A canker sore, on the other hand, is a type of mouth ulcer and
is thought to develop as part of a reaction from your own immune
system. They are usually found on the inside of the mouth.
Because of this, cold sore remedies are not going to be helpful
with this type of problem and won't help you rid canker sores
from your mouth.
Are there any cold sore remedies or canker
sore remedies available?
Cold sore remedies are primarily limited to medications of
various sorts, but many people report relief by the use of ice,
tea bags, or petroleum jelly. While none of these cold sore
remedies will stop a cold sore in its tracks, they haven proven
to relieve the pain in some cases.
There are many ways to end up with a canker sore, but
one of the most
common seems to come from the presence of
a common ingredient in almost all commercial toothpastes called
"sodium lauryl sulfate" or SLS for short. SLS is
added to toothpaste to create a foaming action, to make you
think that something is really happening when you are brushing
your teeth. Often times, the only thing happening is the
beginning of a canker sore!
One reason that people struggle to rid canker sores from their
mouth is due to using cold sore remedies to treat them, instead
of canker sore remedies. Once you have correctly identified your
problem as a canker sore, it is much easier to deal with using
proper canker sore remedies.
For some people, certain foods will often trigger a canker sore
outbreak. Pay close attention to the things you eat and notice
if there is any correlation between a certain food item and the
onset of canker sores.
Also, be sure to use a toothpaste and/or mouthwash that does not
contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).
Neways has never had Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS or SLES) in any of their products including toothpaste, shampoo, bath & shower gel, face cleansers, shaving gels, baby shampoo, baby bath gel, bubble bath, dish soap, laundry detergent, etc |
Fluoride & SLS Free Toothpaste
If you suffer from canker sores, this will be welcome news: Simply changing your toothpaste could prevent these lesions. A common toothpaste ingredient, sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), dries the mucus lining that protects against irritants such as acidic foods - a major cause of the sores, says Pal Barkvoll, an oral surgeon in Oslo, Norway. After having 10 canker-prone people brush with an SLS-free toothpaste for three months, Dr. Barkvoll found that the incidence of sores dropped by 70 percent. Check the labels for SLS-less toothpastes.
HEALTH AND BENEFIT NOTES

Can toothpaste contribute to canker sores? Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is the detergent found in most toothpastes. But research from Oslo, Norway indicates SLS may precipitate canker sores in people already prone to get them. Oral surgeon Paul Barkvoll found a 70 percent decrease in occurrence of canker sores when susceptible persons switched to a toothpaste that did not contain SLS. Barkvoll suspects the ingredient dries out the protective mucous layer lining the mouth, leaving the gums and cheeks vulnerable to irritants like acids in foods.
